Lucasfilm may be looking for its next batch of stories, and Rogue Squadron could become part of it.

The long-awaited Star Wars project, once planned as a feature film directed by Patty Jenkins, is reportedly back in some form of development after being shelved.
The story was intended to introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.

Back in December of 2020, during Disney’s Investor Day presentation, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced that Patty Jenkins had signed on to direct Rogue Squadron. The two even presented a promo video of Jenkins walking down an airstrip before climbing into a life-sized X-wing. The film was slated to be the one that brought Star Wars back to cinemas, with everything on schedule for a theatrical release date of 2023, but after numerous production delays, the project was reported to be shelved by Disney.

The project has recently resurfaced several times with Jenkins making comments that she was once again was working on Rogue Squadron while speaking with Collider Online back in March of 2024, but since then there’s been next to nothing other than rumors.
A NEW HOPE
In 2025, the film industry has been experiencing a period of renewed production activity and a rebound from previous delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, industry strikes, and budget cuts. Several film and streaming series projects that faced significant halts have either resumed or are in active pre-production stages with renewed momentum. This could be the case with recent rumors of a Rogue Squadron’s revival and that the project is again reportedly moving forward.

Lucasfilm
According to SFFGazette.com, Rogue Squadron is indeed reportedly back in active development and claims that Lucasfilm is retooling the film into a Disney+ streaming series.
The update comes via a scoop from X, formerly known to many as Twitter, from @MyTimeToShineH. Here’s what the scooper reportedly had to say.
This potential pivot isn’t completely out of the blue. Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, previously hinted that Rogue Squadron could be reworked into a series format.
Considering the studio’s current focus on streaming projects, the move makes sense, especially since the only Star Wars show currently confirmed for Disney+ is Ahsoka Season 2.
That raises a major question: what does this mean for Jenkins’ involvement? The filmmaker addressed her complicated history with Rogue Squadron earlier this year, explaining how her plans shifted between projects.
She said on the Talking Pictures Podcast:
“So, when I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3, I thought maybe I’ll come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3,” Jenkins said last March.
“So we did a deal for that to happen, started a deal, but I thought I was doing Wonder Woman. When that went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, ‘Oh, we gotta finish this deal.’ We finished the deal right as the strike was happening.”
“So I now owe a draft of Star Wars, and so we will see what happens there. You know, like, who knows?” she continued. “It’s hard, they have a hard job in front of them, of what’s the first movie they’re gonna do.
“They have other directors who have been working, but I am now, you know, I’m back on doing Rogue Squadron, and we’ll see what happens. We need to develop, you know, get it to where we’re both super happy with it.”
Now one could take this claim lightly, but this comes after the recent news from industry insider Daniel Richtman (via Comic Book Movie), that Rogue Squadron remains in active development.

Lucasfilm
Kathleen Kennedy has previously hinted that Rogue Squadron could be reworked into a series format when she spoke to IGN at Star Wars Celebration in 2023, Kennedy said.
“Rogue Squadron, that definitely is something that we still talk about,” she said, though alluded that it may not return in the same way. “Whether it’s a movie, or whether it ends up being in the series space, that’s definitely something.”
While insiders, fan sites, and scoopers have reported that the project is moving forward, as of this writing, there has not been an official confirmation from Disney or Lucasfilm.

Lucasfilm
Is Rogue Squadron finally taking flight? Anything is possible, so while fans of Jenkins can hope that this time around the film or series can make it to the finish line, it is probably best not to hold your breath just yet until we get an official word.

Lucasfilm
It’s clear that Rogue Squadron could have the potential for innovation and impactful storytelling in and upcoming streaming series on Disney +. Take a look back at the Battlestar Galactica series that ran on Sci-fi television back in 2004. Galactica revitalised and reimagined the science-fiction warfare-based 1978 series ‘Battlestar Galactica 1978‘ . Although the series ended after four seasons and two movies in 2009, it spawned several prequels. The series captured mature storytelling that blended intense survival with complex, character-driven drama, and its exploration of real-world issues like war, religion, diversity and politics. It was praised for its gritty realism, compelling characters who felt messy and believable.

Universal
Imagine a series on Disney+ that follows a diverse group of women, gritting their teeth as twin ion engines scream in protest, scarred from countless skirmishes against the evil Empire. To be honest, that storyline would have a lot of similarities to what’s going on in politics today. Capturing that moment could put many fans tuning in more at ease and feel less alone, feeling their fighting along side with the Squadron battling against ternary.
Whether or not Rogue Squadron will see the small screen remains to be seen. What we do know is that their are two new Star Wars films are coming for sure: The Mandalorian & Grogu is set to be released in theaters on May 22, 2026, and Star Wars: Starfighter is planned for release on May 28, 2027. The Mandalorian & Grogu will be directed by Jon Favreau and will continue the story of the popular series, while Starfighter will be a new film directed by Shawn Levy.
