The series follows Spartan warrior Kratos’ who ascends to godhood through a path of violence, tragedy, and eventual redemption.

Critically acclaimed TV veteran Ronald D. Moore, best known for his work on Star Trek and the reimagined Battlestar Galactica television series, for which he won a Peabody and an Emmy Award, will serve as showrunner, executive producer, and writer after the series initially had a different creative team attached.

Moore spoke candidly with IGN back in 2025, mentioning that the game story is a rich, heartfelt, and emotional journey about Kratos and his son Atreus honoring the memory of his wife while focusing on their relationship. Moore said:

“It was just when I started watching it, I started looking at the cutscenes together, and there was so much material there, and I really responded to the characters. I responded to the story of Kratos and his son, and then they set out on this epic journey in this world that was finely detailed and really interesting, and there was a lot of combat and interesting monsters along the way.” He continued. “But I kept coming back to this story of father and son, and it was just emotional and it was different, and I hadn’t seen anything like that before, and I had no expectations because, like you said, I’m not a gamer.”

This father-son dynamic Moore spoke about was an epic chapter in the legendary game series and will most likely be touched upon in the new Amazon Prime series.

Further details surrounding this series have been scarce; however, Amazon’s Prime Video X platform finally dropped some official casting news on Wednesday that Ryan Hurst, who has starred in two long-running television series such as Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, will portray Kratos in the upcoming live-action adaptation. Hurst’s character, described by Prime Video in the show’s official character description as a general who rises to become the Greek God of War before migrating to the Norse realms and transitioning from a vengeful warrior to a protective father and eventual Norse God of Hope.

“Kratos is Spartan by birth, and a god by nature. Raised in a martial culture, he rose to command armies in service of his homeland until one day he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War, and lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle. Over the course of ten wildly successful games, Kratos vanquished mortals, creatures and gods alike. In the process, he became an iconic character in pop culture, known for his stoic nature, unchallenged combat skills, and tragic past. In God of War, the live-action series, his story will closely follow the path of the last two games as he deals with something new: his ten-year-old son Atreus. This father and son dynamic began a whole new chapter in the legendary series and will be the heartbeat of the new show.”

This is not Hurst’s first go-around on the God of War franchise; he voiced the mythical god of thunder Thor in the latest game in the franchise, PlayStation’s God of War: Ragnarok.

God of War will certainly face an uphill battle because of the history that surrounds the challenge of adapting video games to the big screen. This often fails due to a lack of faithfulness to the source material and attempts to Hollywood-ize the stories for the general mass audience. Though recent successes like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Fallout series show a shift toward better adaptation strategies.

If there is anyone who can help with the game-to-screen adaptation, it’s Director Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys, Fallout), who has signed on to direct the first two episodes of the series. His recent work on the hit series Fallout is why he just might be the right person for the project. He’ll certainly have help from longtime game writer and director Cory Barlog, who is serving as an executive producer to ensure the adaptation remains faithful to the source material.

Quite honestly, God of War fans, the series appears to be in good hands with Moore, along with Toye and Barlong teaming up. The Hurst casting is a plus, showing that the production is off to a good and stable start.

The show is currently pre-production in Vancouver, with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios co-producing.
