Following months of rumors, The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com) reports that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz have officially signed on to reprise their famed roles of roguish American adventurer and former French Foreign Legion soldier Rick O’Connell and English Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan in the untitled THE MUMMY film set to hit theaters on May 19, 2028.

The Academy Award-winning duo both starred in their roles in the original blockbuster movie and The Mummy Returns, with Fraser returning solo for Tomb of the Dragon Emperor opposite a different actress, Maria Bello, who took over the role of Evelyn.

The film will reportedly ignore the events of Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, giving fans the sequel entry that many Mummy fans have been longing for.

Plot details surrounding the film are being kept heavily under wraps at this time, but Fraser has been very vocal as of late, stating that he’s excited to finally have the chance to make the film he once envisioned.

The actor recently spoke candidly about the upcoming film in an interview with the Associated Press via People magazine.

“The one I wanted to make was never made,” he elaborated on the hit action-adventure films. Fraser said. “I’m proud of the third one because I think it’s a good standalone movie,” the Oscar winner told the outlet. “We picked up and did what we do with a different crew on deck and gave it our best shot. But the one I wanted to make is forthcoming. And I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want.”

The beloved 1999 The Mummy film is known for being an action-packed classic due to its perfect blend of charismatic leads (Fraser and Weisz), along with an excellent script that has a balanced tone of fun, adventure, horror, and romance that captures the spirit of an Indiana Jones 1930s-type adventure.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (“Scream VI,” “Ready or Not”) are set to direct from a script by David Coggeshall (“The Family Plan”).

Gillett stated in a recent interview with Empire that for them to take on another franchise, the project of this size “has to feel special.” He also mentioned that the current script written by David Coggeshall is “beautiful, sweeping, scary, and fun.”

While Fraser and Weisz are confirmed to be returning, Arnold Vosloo, who brought a sense of terror and tragedy to the villainous Imhotep, and John Hannah, who provided comic relief as Jonathan, have not been confirmed to reprise their roles in the upcoming film. Although recent reports and social media buzz strongly indicate otherwise.

Production is expected to begin in the UK and Morocco in August, with Sean Daniel, William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein producing.
