“With no power comes no responsibility.”

Our first real look at the “Spider-Noir” live-action series is here. The highly anticipated series will debut domestically on MGM+’s linear broadcast channel on May 25th, then globally on Prime Video on May 27th.

The story follows Ben Reilly, a private investigator in 1930s New York played by Academy Award®-winning actor Nicolas Cage, a burnt-out private eye forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only super hero.

This week, all new images featuring Cage in a classic noir aesthetic were officially released online via Esquire, along with Prime Video’s all new first official teaser trailer showcasing the actor in a long trench coat, fedora, and a suit that he describes as being “70% Humphrey Bogart and 30% Bugs Bunny.”

Two different classic noir and color verisons are able to be watched on Prime Video. Comparison courtesy of IGN online.

The show will be available in both black and white and color, blending noir, crime, and superhero fiction with supernatural horror elements.

The two different format options were created so that viewers could have a choice to experience the show in color or black and white, catering to their own preferences. “The truth is, they both work, and they’re beautiful for different reasons,” Cage tells us.

“The colour is super saturated and gorgeous. I think teenage viewers will appreciate the colour, but I also want them to have the option. If they want to experience the concept in black and white, maybe that would instill some interest in them to look at earlier movies and enjoy that as an art form as well.”

The co-showrunner Oren Uzeil says he hopes the viewers see the show as relic from another time. Even the color version doesn’t look precisely modern. “It looks like a black and white film that’s been kind of colourised,” he says. “That was one of the inspirations for how to do it.”

Uziel, also mentioned that the team ultimately decided to focus on a much older, more jaded hero who is way past his prime and at this point in his life where his past finally has caught up to him.

“Ben Reilly has already gone through the entire arc and has seen it all. He’s over it, and trying to move past it. But his past kind of keeps coming back to haunt him. It’s just a different version that we haven’t seen before.”

Along with the exclusive first-look images, Esquire also had the chance to chat with the shows producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who revealed several key details about the upcoming series.

Lord talked about Cage’s unique approach to the role, which includes portraying Ben Reilly as a “spider trying to cosplay as a human.”

“Nic brought all of this thinking to the character that really surprised us and was kind of a headslapper. His take on it was like, ‘I’m a spider trying to cosplay as a human.’ He’s code-switching. Inside his body, he feels like an animal.”

Cage himself will be joined by several key supporting cast members, including Lamorne Morris (New Girl) as his friend, journalist Robbie Robertson, and Li Jun Li (Sinners) as Cat Hardy, a nightclub chanteuse whose name Marvel fans will instantly recognize as a play on Black Cat, aka Felicia Hardy.
