Zack Snyder Awakens Hopes of a Snyderverse Return

Will Snyder’s Vision Resurface in Future DC Projects?

Filmmaker Zack Snyder has reignited speculation about a possible Henry Cavill return to the Snyderverse as Superman.

The Director, who frequently uses his Instagram handle to share behind-the-scenes content along with photography from his DC films, recently alluded to a Superman return again, posting a beautiful high-resolution photo of Cavill in his full Man of Steel costume.

Alongside the photo, Snyder posted a reflective quote that read, “Where I had thought to find an abomination, I shall find a god; where I had thought to slay another, I shall slay myself; where I had thought to travel outward, I shall come to the center of my own existence; where I had thought to be alone, I shall be with all the world”

Snyder’s Instagram posts have consistently created fan discussions and campaigns to restore the filmmaker’s complete vision for the DC universe.

Last year, he again shared an image of Cavill as Superman on Instagram from his Man of Steel audition, wearing the original Christopher Reeve Superman costume from the 1978 film, confirming his suitability for the role. This classic suit featured traditional red trunks and a smaller, sewn-on S-shield, which stood in stark contrast to the modern, textured, trunkless suit designed later for the film.

This image of Cavill in the Reeves costumes sent vibes across social media that he’s trying to convey a message to the studio that his vision is still viable. Snyder picked the most appropriate caption possible, stating: “Henry Cavill. The original Superman suit. This photo. It was undeniable.

It’s well known now that the Man of Steel has served as the foundation for the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) beginning in 2013, with his version of the character being known for a more grounded, mythological, and somber tone compared to previous cinematic iterations.

While he has since moved on to other projects such as Netflix’s hit Rebel Moon saga, his continued social media updates are becoming harder and harder to ignore, much like all his other shares of Ben Affleck as Batman and other DCEU characters.

The chances of the SnyderVerse returning in live action is considered very low at this time, although he discussed the chances of his planned sequels happening or not in an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast celebrating the 10 anniversary of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

“I would never say that there’s no way. I would never because I was on the ride that created Justice League. And if you were in my shoes, there were numerous times, dark times, when I would say there is no chance that there will ever be my version of Justice League. It will never exist, and it can’t. Cost, politics, everything stood against it, and yet it exists. And you know, I think the fans should never forget that they did that. They also raised a ton of money for suicide prevention, and they really did a lot of good. I think that they catch a lot of flak for being toxic or whatever, but they literally saved human lives. So, you can go f*** yourself if that’s what you think.”

Although the recent interview suggests that there might be not be a chance for another movie, the director was asked about the possibility of a sequel in an alternate form through comics or animated adventures. Snyder responded with an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the idea.

“We’ve absolutely talked about it quite a bit. We live in a world where all that’s possible, and whatever form it would take… that would be amazing.”

While this is not the kind of news diehards of the Snyderverse are looking for, it does at least have major potential to give closure to the many fans who have stood behind Zack and his vision.

Snyder has also spoken out recently about his intention to make a solo Man of Steel sequel that would feature the villain Brainiac, but that was before the focus shifted to the wider Justice narrative.

Of course, this idea never came to fruition; after Justice League, the universe went in another direction with a Superman reboot under James Gunn’s new DC, starting with the 2025 film Superman starring David Corenswet. The film took in a little over 650 million worldwide at the box office, a number that wasn’t quite up to par with the studio’s expectations of a billion plus. For the record, Snyder showed no ill intent and expressed public support for Gunn’s film, stating that he was “excited to see” a new interpretation of the character.

“I mean, James has been very kind. I wish them all the best. [My] three movie trilogy is a weed that just won’t die, and so it grows on its own. It has its own life and is not concerned with James’s Superman, which is amazing. I can’t wait to see the next movie, and it’s just awesome. It just really to me it’s it’s just not the same thing. It’s just like a different thing.”

So what’s next for the Man of Steel? Gunn’s sequel to the 2025 Superman film, titled Man of Tomorrow, is on schedule for a theatrical release on July 9, 2027. The film will continue the DCU storyline, with David Corenswet (Superman) and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor) expected to return.

As for the Snyderverse’s return, it is now increasingly unlikely that there will be any more official “Snyderverse” film projects featuring Cavill or any of his DCEU characters, but I, along with many fans, still hold out hope for a return in some form, whether it’s books, comics, or animation. It’s just too important not to have some kind of closure for us fans.
