Spielberg’s new aliens-among-us event film, headed for theaters in summer 2026, marks his return to the classic “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” genre.
Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated upcoming science fiction film Disclosure Day is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 12, 2026. Disclosure returns the 78-year-old Oscar winner to the UFO genre, which he first helped bring into the modern era, having previously directed films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and War of the Worlds.

The film centers on the subject of extraterrestrial life and the global impact of an alien “disclosure” event exploring what happens when humanity discovers it is not alone in the universe.
Based on an original story by Spielberg, with the screenplay from his longtime collaborator David Koepp, who previously teamed on other scripts, the film features an all-star cast that includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson, and Wyatt Russell.
The marketing effort for the movie has been unlike anything we’ve ever seen, kicking off with billboards in New York and Los Angeles bearing the tagline, “All will be disclosed.” It created hype and awoke the legions of Spielberg fans who’ve been patiently waiting for his return to this genre. Then today, something happened that no one was expecting: the first teaser trailer for ‘DISCLOSURE DAY’ via Universal dropped online; it premiered previously in front of screenings of James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash this week.

The trailer shows Emily Blunt as a meteorologist seemingly channeling an alien message live on air, as she becomes possessed by some foreign entity and gains the attention of people watching around the world. “People have a right to know the truth; it belongs to 7 billion people,” Josh O’Connor’s character says in the teaser trailer, with another character stating: “Why would [God] make such a vast universe, but save it only for us?” The full logline, as shared by Studio in the film’s first trailer was also sent around today: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to … Disclosure Day.”
Earlier this year, Koepp called the film “a very emotional experience”.
“I finished reading the script and I bawled,” Domingo said earlier this year. “I thought it was one of the most beautiful scripts about our humanity. I think it was just the most beautiful film about our humanity, and I literally cried because Steven Spielberg believes in the possibility of the human beings we could be..”
“It’s like old-school Spielberg,” Josh O’Connor recently said in an interview. “I think people will be excited.”

The teaser trailer is definitely filled with plenty of classic Spielbergian imagery, and thankfully doesn’t reveal too much. It aims to capture the current cultural fascination and government discussions surrounding UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) with a fresh perspective. I’ve personally been waiting decades for a new Spielberg movie that returns to his roots, and I’m excited to see him make another film in the same sci-fi genre as Close Encounters that explores humanity’s first contact with alien intelligence.
