Darth Maul Returns in All-New Trailer for Disney’s Star Wars Animated Series ‘Shadow Lord’

Lucasfilm has just revealed the very first trailer for ‘Maul: Shadow Lord’

The all-new Star Wars animated TV mini-series Maul: Shadow Lord is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ this April.

Created by Lucasfilm’s new Co-President Dave Filoni, the series is set between the events of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, and follows Lord Maul during the early reign of the Empire as he attempts to rebuild his Crimson Dawn criminal syndicate.

Actor Sam Witwer, who voiced the character across the various animated series and had a brief appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story, is set to reprise his role as the Dark Lord of the Sith.

Maul’s iconic red-and-black-faced look originated in Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace, when he lost the lightsaber battle at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi. He was later resurrected in a triumphant return for the ages in the season finale of Season 4 of the animated series, The Clone Wars, after intense hatred and mastery of the Dark Side allowed him to cling to life.

Yesterday, StarWars.com released a brief teaser trailer for Shadow Lord that featured a beautiful musical rendition of the iconic John Williams The Phantom Menace “Duel of the Fates” heard in the background, with Maul’s face, lightsaber clashes, and silhouettes of Obi-Wan Kenobi flashing on screen.

Plot details for the show have been kept under wraps, although it is theorized that we may finally get answers as to what Maul was up to before and after the events of Solo: A Star Wars Story. That film ended with the revelation that the Sith Lord was the leader of Crimson Dawn.

George Lucas once envisioned Maul as “the godfather of crime in the universe,” with plans to make him a major underworld figure and the Sith master of Darth Talon in his original sequel trilogy concepts. So it’s possible that some of his ideas may be incorporated into the story. Filoni has stated that in the past that he still consults with George on current Star Wars projects.

“I’m very respectful of his time,” said Filoni. “He has a museum to finish… I’ve had a lot of mentoring from him. The answer is yes, I do every now and then, but it’s got to be something really important for me to go and seek him out now. And yet even when I do, it feels very mythical to go before him and talk,” he said recently on a Happy Sad Confused Podcast interview.

Matt Michnovetz, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, serves as head writer with Brad Rau, Star Wars: The Bad Batch as supervising director.

Marvel Comics’ ‘Star Wars: Shadow of Maul’ miniseries, a prequel to ‘Maul: Shadow Lord’, hits newsstands in March.

While we patiently wait for the Disney+ series to kick off, Marvel Comics will release a five-issue prequel miniseries in March titled Star Wars: Shadow of Maul that sets the stage for what’s to come. Definitely take the time to check that out, as it may reveal details previously unknown.

You can watch the official trailer below via StarWars.com, where Maul can be seen in a “new style of animation.”
