Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film Disclosure Day is unlikely to top the magic of his 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which captured the hearts of audiences with its themes of hope and connection; however, it may end up being the spiritual successor that many have waited decades for.

Set in the present day, Disclosure Day explores how society, media, and governments react when the truth about the universe can no longer be hidden.

Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, and Wyatt Russell lead an all-star cast in the film that marks Spielberg’s directorial return to the genre.

The synopsis reads, “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to … ‘Disclosure Day.’”

Universal Pictures has released a new
First Look with Steven Spielberg” featurette for his upcoming sci-fi thriller, where the director explains his lifelong fascination with the unknown, stating he has always been curious about “the sky at night” and believes in the “guarantee that there is life off this planet.” The video debuted alongside a “Big Game Spot” (Super Bowl ad) on February 9, 2026.

“I’ve always been fascinated with things. that cannot be explained, and I’ve made a lot of movies about things that cannot be explained. From sharks to saucers.

When I was just a little kid, I remember developing a real curiosity about the sky at night and what’s happening up there and also not the possibility, but the guarantee that there is life off this planet.

People’s questions about what is not only going on in our skies, but what is going on in our worlds, in our realities has reached a critical mass of people’s complete fascination with are we alone or are we not alone? And if someone knows we’re not alone, why haven’t we been told?”

While details are sparse, we did get a sense of what’s ahead in an earlier teaser, which showed Blunt as a Kansas Kansas City TV meteorologist who is suddenly overcome by a mysterious extraterrestrial force while taping a weather segment live on air. O’Connor stars as an alien life believer, determined to reveal the truth about life outside of Earth to the rest of the world.

“People have a right to know the truth, it belongs to 7 billion people,” Josh O’Connor’s character says in the teaser trailer (which, fair warning, doesn’t actually show aliens or UFOs, but hints toward them in all sorts of ways). Another character intones: “Why would [God] make such a vast universe, but save it only for us?”

David Koepp penned the film’s script based on a story by Spielberg, while Janusz Kamiński served as cinematographer with John Williams composing the score.

Kristie Macosko Krieger produces “Disclosure Day” which opens in cinemas on June 12th.
