The first trailer for Dune: Part Three has been released online, bringing us closer to “the epic conclusion” of director Denis Villeneuve’s feature film adaptations
of the novels written by Frank Herbert.

This highly anticipated final installment of the fantasy film franchise adapted from Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah was officially teased to an AMC theater room packed full of journalists, film critics, bloggers, and creators in Los Angeles, California, last week shortly after the Oscars, where Warner Bros. had a triumphant evening, scoring two big blockbuster wins in Sinners and One Battle After Another.

The film, which is set more than a decade after the original Dune book, follows Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as a god-like figure haunted by the interstellar jihad carried out in his name, which claimed over 61 billion lives. He now feels trapped by his own prescience, forced to follow a path he knows leads to tragedy to avoid even worse futures.

“It happens many years later. It’s a very different movie from the first two,” Villeneuve said during the Q&A portion of the event. “We see Paul dealing with the consequences of having too much power and him trying to figure out how to get out of this cycle of violence. And, of course, he can see the future, so he’s kind of invincible. We follow people trying to overthrow him.”

The trailer takes viewers on a deep dive into the characters, featuring a story that’s much darker and serves as a more cautionary tale about the dangers of messianic figures and absolute power.

It opens with Zendaya’s Chani asking Chalamet’s Paul, “If we have a girl, what will we name her?” If it’s a boy, she says they should name him Leto — after Duke Leto Atreides, Paul’s father — because then “he would have the wisdom of his grandfather.”

Paul then tells Lady Jessica, “War feeds on itself. The more I fight, the more enemies fight back,” while Pattinson’s Scytale appears with a bleached-blond buzz cut and shaved eyebrows.

“I’m doing the best I can to protect my family,” Paul continues as scenes of fighting play.

We see shots of The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy, cast as Atreides’ sister Alia, Jason Momoa is in a fight scene as Hayt, a resurrection of his character Duncan Idaho, who died in the first film, Javier Bardem reprising his role as Stilgar, the leader of the Sietch Tabr, a prominent Fremen community on the desert planet Arrakis, and Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan.

Paul is shown ascending to the top of a plinth, high above a massive, cheering crowd. Then we see him facing an opponent in the desert. “I’m not afraid to die,” we hear him say in voice-over, “but I must not die yet.” In the final clip, Chani steels herself and runs toward an invisible adversary before fading to black.

In between clips, text on screen reads: “This December, experience the epic conclusion of the Dune trilogy.”

Villeneuve also explained to the audience in attendance how he originally wasn’t going to return to the Dune universe after Part II.

“I went to my crew and said, ‘I’m taking a break. That’s it. Bye-bye,’” he said at the event, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “I went back home and I kept waking in the middle of the night with those images. I was supposed to do another movie.”

But “the image of Dune: Part 3 … kept coming back and coming back. I said, ‘All right, let’s do it.” Strong positive fan reactions to the second movie also encouraged him to complete the trilogy faster than planned. “It’s a very different movie than the first ones. It’s a good idea to come back to those worlds, not by nostalgia, but by urgency,” he said. “If the first movie was contemplation, a boy exploring a new world, and the second one is a war movie, this one is a thriller. It is action-packed and tense. More muscular.”

Actress Zendaya, who also attended the event and has spent her entire 20s working on the series since the first film’s production, expressed her gratitude for the experience just before the premiere of the first official footage for the final chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy.

“I’m so excited,” Zendaya, who plays Fremen warrior Chani, said after confirming she’d already seen the footage that was about to roll on screen. “These movies Ty have meant so much to me over the years. I’ve literally been able to grow up in my entire 20s doing them, and so they have such a special place in my heart.”

One actor who was notably absent from the live launch event in Los Angeles was the film’s star Timothée Chalamet. But thankfully, to the delight of his many fans, he was able to share a message via a recorded video to introduce the tease, praising Villeneuve’s dedication to completing trilogy that began way back in 2018.

“This film would not exist without the master of cinema, the great artist that is Denis Villeneuve,” Chalamet said in the recording. “Denis always says, ‘Vive le cinéma.’ And with this third film, I think he has done just that: a true act of cinema. I’m not alone in saying thank you to Denis for his dedication in bringing the ‘Dune’ films to life — and now the ‘Dune’ trilogy to life.”

For anyone who was concerned about the film not being able to live up to the expectations of the first two, those fears can now be laid to rest. Dune: Part Three shows why franchise is made to be seen on the biggest screen possible, and this teaser trailer gives us an ample reminder of it.

Director Villeneuve conceived Dune: Part Three to be seen in large formats above all. “The movie’s really meant to be an IMAX experience and to be seen on the biggest screen as possible,” the director said this week. “That’s how we dreamed the movie.”

That’s right: the hero we followed in the first two movies is now a world-conquering tyrant. Embraced as the messiah of the Fremen, Paul has triggered an interstellar jihad, but his prescient visions have convinced him it’s the only way to ultimately save humanity. © Warner Bros

Hans Zimmer returns to compose the score, while Linus Sandgren (La La LandNo Time to Die) takes over cinematography duties from Greig Fraser, who worked on the first two films. Fraser was unable to return due to scheduling conflicts with Sam Mendes’ upcoming Beatles projects.
