The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer: first look at the Star Wars spinoff

“Somewhere in space, this may all be happening right now.”

Lucasfilm dropped the first trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu on Monday, revealing more about its story and giving us a first real look at new and returning characters from the Star Wars galaxy.

We see our heroes taking on AT-ATs, engaging in underground gladiatorial combat, and meeting with Sigourney Weaver, best known for her role as Ellen Ripley in the Alien film series, a role for which she has received worldwide recognition, playing a mysterious member of the New Republic.

Set after the events of the Return of the Jedi and the fall of the Galactic Empire. The film continues the story of Din Djarin and Grogu in the era of the nascent New Republic as they undertake a new mission against remaining Imperial warlords.

In addition to the trailer, we got a brief plot synopsis from Lucasfilm.

“The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.”

When Mandalorian and Grogu arrives next summer, the all new blockbuster Star Wars film stands to pay off the revitalizing work of director Jon Favreau and story master Dave Filoni.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” Favreau said when the film was first revealed. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Movie Trailer

Watching this trailer was really fun. It is an interesting way to put out a trailer: it’s just music and images. There is no dialogue. So we don’t know what’s going on with the story. We’re solely just enticed by the music and the visuals. To release a retro type trailer, in the fashion of an old serial from the 1930’s, with just music and visuals definitely will make George Lucas proud. George was inspired by old sci-fi and adventure Flash Gordon and Buck Roger’s serials. It serves as a nod to where his love for filmmaking began. Whether or not that was Favreau’s intention isn’t certain but if it was, it’s an excellent call.

Speaking of music, Ludwig Göransson returns to score the film based on the Disney+ Mandalorian TV series. The film hits theaters on May 22, 2026.
