Future of the Star Wars Saga: Will it feature Rey?

While new Star Wars trilogy projects have reportedly been announced over the years, it’s not yet been confirmed whether or not their actually happening. Like many Star Wars fans who grew up with the original saga of nine films, Most would be ecstatic to see a new trilogy of films with a faithful continuation.

In the case of the first Sequel films, most thought they were really good and enjoyed them simply because it was more Star Wars content. Others felt it was inconsistent, with plot threads picked up, dropped, and picked up again. The films attempted tell a story that would appeal to both the franchise’s existing fanbase and a newer audience. Exactly how successful this was is a matter of opinion to this day. The sequels film’s final scene, which sees Rey, actress Daisy Ridley, take up the Skywalker name, did offer one small visual clue as to the future of Rey’s Force journey.

It’s now been two years since Lucasfilm officially announced that Ridley would reprise her role as Rey Skywalker in a new Star Wars film. The Rey film was reportedly to be a one-off set fifteen years after the events of Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker. It was said to follow Rey as she creates a new Jedi Order. Further plot details still remain under wraps at this time. With no release date set.

If this film actually happens, will fans be ok with the story of what becomes of The New Republic and Rey being tied up in a one-off film?

Lucasfilm has arguably become to cautious with its plan for the future. The Mandalorian & Grogu being an easy out – a way to get the Disney plus audiences in the theatre seats. Then you have Star Wars: Starfighter which is set approximately five years after the events of Rise of Skywalker in yet another standalone adventure set in a period of the Star Wars timeline that will be near the the planned Rey film.

As early as November 2024, multiple sites reported that Simon Kinberg a film producer, director and screenwriter known for producing the X-Men films, Fant4stic, Logan, the Deadpool films was writing and producing. an new film trilogy, with some conflicting reports about whether or not these movies will be episodes X, XI and XII or a completely new trilogy. Will the new trilogy feature Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker?, or will the the 2017 announced, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson trilogy get to tie up lose ends. Although that the trilogy is reportedly no longer in active development.

So where does that leave us with Rey? Daniel Richtman recently reported that the film is “on hold”:

“The Rey movie is on hold once again, as both the Shawn Levy and James Mangold Star Wars films are moving forward first. The project is not canceled — just temporarily on hold.”

As for the saga, the status of its continuation is at best described as being in flux, with the story and release dates and plan ever so frequently changing. As a result, the promise of a sequel trilogy or even a single follow-up movie to conclude Rey’s arc remains in doubt. We can only hope that the studio finally settles down and find a direction before it’s too late.

May the Force be with you…
