Star Trek: Paramount Chief Says New Movies on the Way | Kelvin Timeline Hope

It looks like Paramount is apparently eager to reboot the classic Star Trek movie franchise that’s been part of their history for quite some time.

While nothing is confirmed at this time, it would certainly make sense, especially since the franchise is one of the biggest cinematic properties of all-time.

Details regarding the report at this time are currently scarce, though a new report from Variety noted that we could hear some actual concrete information going into the new year.

In a recent Variety online article, Paramount’s own chief David Ellison gave some insights into the studio’s outlook for the beloved Star Trek franchise.

“The hope is to have a fresh Star Trek movie, though the studio has moved on from the idea of bringing back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the ensemble from the J.J. Abrams reboot.”

This news shouldn’t be taken lightly, especially since it’s coming from Ellison. Back in August of 2025, the merger of Skydance Media with Paramount Global was finalized, resulting in the formation of the Paramount Skydance Corporation. Ellison, who now serves as Chairman and CEO of the newly merged entity, emphasized the urgency to execute his vision for the organization’s transformation. Ellison considers Star Trek a top priority franchise and plans a “holistic” approach, integrating film and TV production to revitalize it, especially aiming for a new theatrical release.

Paramount hasn’t announced anything concrete, but it makes sense that they’re likely to dust off the Star Trek film property at some point for something new. The studio’s plan is to give the film franchise some time, considering their recent run on streaming Trek series. Right now, Paramount is working hard to finish their epic series Strange New Worlds and continuing production on its upcoming Starfleet Academy. Both shows were developed by executive producer Alex Kurtzman and are produced by his Secret Hideout production company for CBS Studios. Strange New Worlds currently streams exclusively on Paramount+.

But whatever decisions the film studio makes for Star Trek and its future, Ellison will be respectful of the property and try to keep fans happy with the results.

Of course, any future movies in the Kelvin timeline are unlikely to be on the big screen, as Paramount is moving on to new Star Trek projects that will not feature the Chris Pine-led cast and plans for a sequel.

Does this really mean the end of those characters in its timeline on the big screen? Most likely, yes—for now, and I strongly stress the now.

If you’re truly a Trekkie, then you’ll know that Star Trek is famously full of time travel, a recurring element across every series that has led to characters traveling to the past, future, alternate timelines, and experiencing time loops. This has been a central plot device since the beginning, used for everything from preserving the timeline to creating entirely new realities, and is featured in some of the franchise’s most iconic episodes. Even Prime Spock‘s actions led to the very creation of the Kelvin Timeline.

It’s likely the world of Star Trek is streaming for the franchise’s near future. But I wouldn’t count out seeing the crew members of the Kelvin Timeline in some form, whether it’s on the big or small screen. It’s just a matter of when and where.

Even though the news from Ellison is disappointing, it’s not that surprising. The Kelvin timeline’s movie arc is over at the moment for the film adventures, but thankfully through a comic book storyline has given Captain Kirk a bittersweet, universe-saving end. So all is not lost.

For now, I leave you with a famous phrase associated with the Vulcan salute. “Live long and prosper”
