Amazon MGM Studios Greenlights All New Stargate Series After Years of Hiatus

For many years, there has been much speculation about whether the Stargate universe would get another opportunity on a streaming platform or on the big screen. With films, previous spinoffs, and books already established, fans have been eagerly awaiting the news that we all received earlier this week: a new live-action Stargate series has officially been greenlit for Prime Video.

The new series produced by Amazon’s MGM Studios will be developed by veteran Stargate writer and producer Martin Gero and is intended to not be a straight reboot, but a continuation of the franchise’s established mythology, bringing back key creative talent from the original shows.

The news comes after an official press announcement was held by Prime Video, on @PrimeVideo’s X platform channel with creator and executive producer Martin Gero, consulting producers Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, Darren Sumner from GateWorld.net and David Read from DialTheGate.com.

Gero, who has worked as a writer and producer on the three previous live-action Stargate shows says he promises you’re in for something spectacular.

“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series. Stargatetaught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA,” Gero said in a statement. “I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world, I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”

Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV Development, Amazon MGM Studios, also touched on that in a recent statement.

“‘Stargate’ is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos,” said Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV development for Amazon MGM Studios. “In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory, and Joby, we’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that honors the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.”

The exciting news that the Stargate universe at Amazon will continue to expand with the all-new series has generated significant excitement among the franchise’s dedicated fanbase, who have been awaiting a revival for over a decade. Although specific plot details are currently being kept under wraps, you can rest assured that it’s in good hands because it is being led by a team of creators with significant experience and a personal connection to the original franchise. Having Gero, a veteran writer and producer from the original Stargate TV shows (SG-1, Atlantis, Universe) involved is significant, to say the least.
